Bill and Dave Show

So here it is. As a reminder, my friend and I spent two and a half days living in the Alexander Gallery, at Clackamas College just outside of Portland, OR, and painting, drawing, etc.. We worked hard and had a lot of fun. I finished about 12 pieces. My students will recognize some of them as charcoal gesso demo things. Of course these don't have the level of intensity usually seen in my work but are refreshing in other ways. It was a challenge to see how fast we could work and yet keep a level of quality. We started slow but built steam and ended with more than enough to cover the walls. I'd do this again in a heartbeat with the right partner. Dave and his school were great!

The pieces are all some mix of acrylics, charcoal, and/or ink. The works on cardboard are between approx. 18x24 and 30x40 inches while the others are all in the 11x15 inch range.

This was the student project. Enlarging a collage by reproducing sections 1" x 1" up to 12" x 12". it was pretty impressive on the wall.

New Alice Underway

Thought I'd put this up. I'm trying to finish this for the Alice show but I'm leaving tomorrow for five days. So here is my third Alice offering in progress. I'll finish it next weekend when I get back. The reason for leaving town is a cool show I'm doing with a friend in Portland. We will be spending four days in the gallery at Clackamas College painting for an opening on Thursday night. Hopefully I will be posting pics here of our progress and gallery frolicking. There will also be a video at the end with interviews and candid shots, etc.. So check in now and then for updates.

Alice and Mad

And finally. . .This is one of those paintings that I worked on too long and could have worked on forever. I want to put more stuff into it but life goes on. Hope you're not disappointed.

In the Meantime. . .

While we're waiting for Bill to finish his Alice piece. . .Sometimes I like to modify sketchbook stuff to make cool little drawings. This was done back before my Narwhal Rain painting. I like it so much I think I'm going to enter it in something.

Hatter 4

I'm posting this because I love you. I am diddling with this piece too much. Adding and subtracting, then adding and subtracting some more. I was also interrupted with an emergency piece over the weekend. I will finish this in the next day or two or die trying. It really only needs a few things unless I start doing my adding and subtracting thing again. Guess I'll lose money on this painting but if I were in it for the money I would be doing someone's taxes right now.

Hatter 3

I think this might be the last progress shot. The next thing you see will be the finished image, I hope.

Not Sure

I'm not really sure if this will work or if it's even worth doing but I am going to try and post progress shots of this painting for the Alice in Wonderland show as I go. Usually I post the finished piece with the progress shots but we'll try it this way to see what happens. I feel a little naked showing all of my marks, snots and goobers as I go but this is an important part of my process. The bad brushstrokes and "mistakes" all tell me something and could lead to beautiful passages which would otherwise stay hidden were I more careful. Anyway, this doesn't work quite as well when I'm under a tight deadline but there is nothing more enjoyable for me than this kind of dialogue with a painting.
